In Mexico, native maize is cultivated in 70% or more of the agricultural area devoted to maize. These corns have been improved by the producers who cultivate them over the years, however, they still present aspects that are considered unfavorable, such as excessive plant and ear height, as well as low yield. To reduce these unfavorable aspects, researchers from the INIFAP Campo Experimental Iguala have worked on the improvement of the Pepitilla and Ancho breeds, in which through convergent-divergent mass selection and individual selection, significant changes have been made in the characteristics mentioned above. This allows the producer to modify the agronomic management of the crop and improve its production levels.
